PEI Newsmakers – May 2026
On the international baseball stage, Rhonda Pauls represented PEI in Puerto Rico, umpiring behind home plate during the Baseball World Cup Qualifier matchup between Canada and Puerto Rico.
Field hockey athlete Jessie Stewart and Head Coach Lacey MacLauchlan travelled to Poznan, Poland, where they competed in four games with Field Hockey Canada’s U16 Youth Team.
The PEI Whitecaps 15U Softball team also saw success on the road, splitting a pair of games against the Nova Scotia Schooners 15U program in Nova Scotia.
At the Malmö Cup in Sweden, Amy Burk captured a gold medal with the Canadian Women’s Goalball Team, continuing PEI’s presence on the international para sport scene.
In women’s hockey, rising star Megan Mossey announced her commitment flip to the University of Wisconsin Badgers Women’s Hockey program, joining one of the premier NCAA programs in North America.
Island golfers Hunter Burke and Brett Shaw competed against some of the country’s top junior talent at the NextGen Ontario Championship held at Tangle Creek Golf Course in Thornton, Ontario. Burke finished tied for ninth place, while Shaw earned a tie for 13th.
The pride of Triathlon PEI, Martin Sobey continued his impressive international season at the World Triathlon Cup Chengdu in China, placing 13th in the individual event before helping Canada secure a bronze medal in the relay competition. He then finished 7th at the World Triathlon Championship Series in Japan.
At the Canadian Para Hockey Championships in Quebec, Islanders Andrew Williamson, Alex Clark, and Blaise Roberts represented PEI in national competition.
A historic moment for lacrosse on the Island, as the Island Oaks Junior B Box Lacrosse Club earned the program’s first-ever victory with a dominant 21-0 win over the Cala Cardinals.
Colin MacAdam was named a 2026 inductee into the PEI Sports Hall of Fame as both an athlete and builder in track and field. MacAdam is being recognized for his outstanding achievements in competition as well as his lasting contributions to the development and growth of athletics across Prince Edward Island.
PEI junior tennis player Yolanda Paing delivered a historic performance at the International Tennis Federation (ITF) World Tour J60 Championship, winning three consecutive main draw matches to advance to the quarterfinals — a milestone achievement for PEI tennis.
Island gymnasts also found success at the Eastern Canadian Championships held in Fredericton, NB, bringing home multiple medals. Hunter McPherson earned gold on parallel bars, while Isaac Landry captured silver on rings and bronze on pommel horse. Alex Rodriguez led the way with gold on floor, silver on parallel bars, high bar, and vault, along with bronze in the all-around competition. Dexter Ross added a bronze medal on parallel bars.
The Summerside Western Capitals capped off a remarkable season with a runner-up finish at the Centennial Cup, falling 4-1 to the Niverville Nighthawks in the national championship game on home ice.
On the roads of Halifax, Stan Chaisson delivered an outstanding performance by winning the 2026 Blue Nose Marathon.
Longtime Island sport leader Ed Hilton was announced as a 2026 inductee into the PEI Sports Hall of Fame in the builder category. Hilton is being recognized for decades of dedication and contributions to multiple sports across Prince Edward Island, leaving a lasting impact on athletes, coaches, and sport organizations throughout the province.
On a hockey rink over 5000 km away, Josh Currie signs with the Moser Medical Graz99ers of the ICEHL in Austria.
Rising basketball star Alex Newson is named to Canada’s U18 Women’s Training Camp roster ahead of the FIBA U18 Women’s AmeriCup.
On the final day of May, the U17 Whitecaps captured gold at the 2nd Annual Richard Pettipas Memorial Softball Tournament.
