August was another impressive month for Prince Edward Island sport, with athletes, coaches, teams and administrators making their mark at provincial, national and international competitions. From national podium finishes and championship titles to individual honours and historic performances, Islanders continued to showcase the depth of talent across the Island.

The month got off to a strong start as PEI soccer teams enjoyed success at the Canada Youth Cup National Showcase in Halifax. The PEIFC U15 Boys battled their way to a silver-medal finish, while the PEIFC U17 Girls reached the top of the podium, capturing gold. The results provided an early highlight to what would become a busy month for PEI athletes.

Football coach Josh Blakely helped Team Atlantic earn a bronze medal at the Senior Women’s Football Nationals, adding another national podium finish to the month.

Aidan Campbell delivered a historic performance at the Legion National Youth Track and Field Championships. Competing in the U16 Boys High Jump, Campbell cleared 1.88 metres to capture silver. The result marked PEI’s first medal at the championships in 12 years, making it a particularly significant achievement for Island track and field.

The PEI Cricket Association celebrated a championship on home soil, winning the Eastern T20 2026 Cricket Championship, held in Charlottetown.

The U15 Prospects also reached the podium, earning silver at the 2026 Bear Claw Classic Softball Tournament. PEI softball continued to make headlines throughout the month, with athletes and teams collecting medals at tournaments across the region.

Another milestone came in softball as Jeff Ellsworth was inducted into the International Softball Congress Hall of Fame, recognizing his contributions to the sport.

Hockey also brought international success, as Brad MacKenzie, serving as an Assistant Coach, and Andrew “Spider” MacNeill, serving as Equipment Manager, helped Hockey Canada capture gold at the Hlinka Gretzky Cup.

The recognition continued when Mia McGee-Gallant was named to the Tournament 11 Team at the U16 Field Hockey Nationals, earning recognition among the top performers at the national event.

Baseball was next to celebrate, as Connor Morrison was named the top catcher at the Baseball Canada Cup, which was held in Summerside. Morrison’s individual recognition highlighted the strong performances Islanders delivered on home soil throughout the summer.

Golf also saw an Islander move into a national coaching role. Katie White was named an Assistant Coach with Team Canada Golf – Next Gen Girls on a maternity-leave contract, giving her an opportunity to work with some of Canada’s emerging young golf talent.

Another Island athlete earned a spot on a Hockey Canada national roster, as Megan Mossey was named to the National Under-18 Women’s Team roster.

PEI cyclists produced a strong showing at the Brookvale Canada Cup cycling race, with seven athletes and two teams earning medals. Jenson Pickard won U11 Men’s gold, while Violet Van Toever earned U13 Women’s silver and bronze. Levi Jay captured U15 Men’s gold, and Gillian Perry earned U13 Women’s silver. In the Master Sport Men’s category, Connor Barrett and Andrew Pickard earned bronze. The Mixed Relay also saw PEI success, with Starvin Marvin’s taking silver and The Ultimates earning bronze.

The Island’s lacrosse community joined the medal celebrations as the Lacrosse PEI U17 Boys defeated Team Quebec to capture bronze in the B Division at the 2026 Minor Box Lacrosse Nationals.

Sport PEI AHP Team Member Ellen Dixon had an outstanding week at the 2026 PDGA Amateur Disc Golf World Championships in Buffalo, finishing 2nd in the FA1 division. She shot an incredible -8 in the final round to finish tied at -29 overall, forcing a playoff for the World Championship title. Ellen’s impressive performance earned her a spot on the podium at the World Championships.

Special Olympics PEI athletes had an outstanding showing at the 2026 Special Olympics Canada Summer Games in Medicine Hat, Alberta, bringing home an impressive 33 medals across eight sports. Team PEI was represented by 46 athletes competing in athletics, basketball, bocce, golf, powerlifting, soccer, softball and swimming, showcasing their dedication, determination and talent on the national stage. Gold medal winners for PEI: Matthew Jehn – Golf, Jeremy Wall – Running Long Jump – Athletics, Ellen MacNearney – 100M Backstroke – Swim, Matthew Gallant – 50m Backstroke – Swim

The Subaru of Charlottetown TriLobster Triathlon was also a successful event for PEI athletes, with ten Islanders earning podium finishes. Sarah Victor placed third in the Super Sprint Triathlon, while Evan Perry and Tessa Casey placed second and third, respectively, in the Super Sprint Duathlon. Heather MacAulay finished third in the Sprint Duathlon (Non-Draft), and Dale Burden won the Standard Triathlon – WQ. In the 3-Person Relay Standard Triathlon, Emma Brown, Matthew Antle and Nathan Ford finished third. Jesse Shields placed third in the Standard Duathlon – WQ, Ron Siemens finished third in the Standard Aquabike – WQ, and Darcy McCourt earned third place in the Long Distance Aquabike – WQ.

The U13 Lacrosse PEI team added another lacrosse medal to the province’s haul, earning silver in the B Division at the 2026 Minor Lacrosse Nationals in Halifax.

Lindsay Lamrock also delivered a strong performance at the Canadian Half Marathon Championships in Edmonton, finishing sixth overall while placing second in her age category.

Continuing news in the world of Island softball, PEI teams earned two medals at their respective Eastern Canadian championships, with the U15AA Western Attack capturing silver in Quebec and the U13AA Stratford Stealers earning bronze in Newfoundland. Individual honours followed, as Kara Hutt was named Tournament MVP in the U15 competition and Rasalie Dunn was selected to the U13 All-Star Team.

In the world of triathlon, Martin Sobey emerges with the gold medal at the Canadian Super Sprint Championships in Victoria, BC.

Capping off another impressive national performance, Hunter Burke placed fourth at the Canadian U15 Golf Championships in Bath, ON.
