Since launching in fall 2025, Sport PEI’s 2023 Canada Games Legacy Performance Hub has supported more than 750 Island athletes while strengthening performance sport development across Prince Edward Island.

Located within the Sport PEI office and led by Sport Performance Coordinator Spencer House, the Performance Hub was established through the lasting legacy of the 2023 Canada Winter Games. Designed to support athlete development at all levels of sport, the Performance Hub serves as a centralized space for education, testing, training support, and collaboration within the Island sport community.

Using state-of-the-art equipment, the Performance Hub offers a wide range of testing options for both general athletic development and sport-specific performance analysis. Since opening, the Performance Hub has now tested more than 750 athletes from a variety of sports including football (flag and tackle), ringette, baseball, track and field, basketball, biathlon, and many others.

Since its creation, the Performance Hub has quickly become a valuable resource for Island athletes striving to compete at the provincial, national, and international levels. By increasing access to performance oriented resources within Prince Edward Island, the facility helps reduce barriers for athletes who previously needed to travel off-Island to access similar services and expertise.

The initiative reflects the long-term impact of hosting the 2023 Canada Winter Games, ensuring the benefits of the national multi-sport event continue to strengthen the province’s sport system well beyond the Games themselves. The Performance Hub also supports collaboration among coaches, sport leaders, and organizations, helping build a stronger and more connected performance sport environment across Prince Edward Island.

When asked about the impact of the Performance Hub on athletes and sport organizations, Football PEI Athlete Development Manager Zak Jarvis emphasized the value of centralized testing and data collection.

“The Performance Hub has been valuable in helping us organize and collect athlete data in a way that supports our identification process,” said Jarvis. “Having centralized testing results and physical metrics allows us to establish clear entry points for athletes and better track development over time. It’s also helped us look beyond individual progress by reviewing team averages and overall trends from physical and performance testing, giving us a stronger understanding of where our programs are succeeding and where we can continue to improve athlete development.”

In addition to athletic testing, the Performance Hub offers access to a variety of resources and services aimed at improving athlete performance and long-term development. These include strength and conditioning support, sport science education, recovery resources, coach development opportunities, and meeting space for provincial sport organizations and athletes preparing for competition.

Bianca Boutilier, a Track and Field athlete with Athletics PEI, said the Performance Hub has provided valuable insight into her athletic development.

“It’s incredible to have a resource like the Performance Hub in PEI,” said Boutilier. “As a Track and Field athlete especially, every movement is so technical — even small imbalances can hold you back. I’ve dealt with instability issues, and the Hub’s testing gave me real data on exactly where those gaps were. Instead of guessing, I finally had something concrete to work from.”

Athletes and coaches utilizing the facility have already seen the benefits of having a dedicated performance space tailored to the needs of Island sport. From educational workshops and training sessions to recovery and planning opportunities, the Performance Hub continues to play an important role in preparing athletes for success both on and off the field of play.

As participation and demand continue to grow, Sport PEI remains committed to expanding opportunities through the 2023 Canada Games Legacy Performance Hub and ensuring Island athletes have access to the tools, resources, and support needed to achieve their goals.
