50 Years of Sport PEI Awards – Suzanne Birt
The 2023 Sport PEI awards will be our 50th edition! To celebrate this milestone, we wanted to take a look back at those who have received the Lieutenant Governor’s award as PEI’s top athlete of the year.
Suzanne Birt (Gaudet) – Curling – 2002, 2003
Suzanne first won her Lieutenant Governor’s award for her play during the 2002 season. Suzanne and Team Gaudet returned to the World Junior Curling championships for a second year in a row. Finishing the preliminary round with an 8-1 record, then claiming their second World medal, with a bronze medal win over Italy 9-8.
In 2003, Suzanne made the jump to senior women’s curling and her first appearance in the Scotties. It was a debut to remember, after dropping their first game to Team Canada, the Team from PEI would win 10 straight games to finish the preliminary round with a 10-1 record. Team Gaudet would finish the tournament in third place with Suzanne shooting the second highest percentage amongst skips. This great season would earn Suzanne a second consecutive Lieutenant Governor’s award.
