PEI Newsmakers – November & December 2024

With December being such a busy month at Sport PEI with our Amateur Sport Awards, we saved the last two months of action in the year for one double-edition of Newsmakers!

Nov. 8 – Isa MacPhee, Megan Mossey, Taylor Hunter, and Petra Klimes help Team Atlantic to 7th place finish at U18 Women’s National Hockey Championships.

Nov. 10 – Lucas MacDonald wins Gold in Senior Ne-Wasa +81kg, Silver in Senior -90kg, and Bronze in U21 -90kg divisions at Quebec Open (Judo).

Nov. 10 – Brad MacKenzie (Asst. Coach) and Andrew “Spider” MacNeill (Equip Manager) win gold at the World Under-17 Hockey Challenge with Team Canada.

Nov. 11 – Alex Stokes (defense) and Will Mix (midfield) of Saint Mary’s University  named Maritime University Field Lacrosse League Second-Team All-Stars.

Nov. 14 – Lucas MacDonald wins Bronze U21 -90kg division at Montreal Junior Pan-Am Judo Cup. 

Nov. 15 – Jase MacPherson, Max MacKenzie, Ryan Doyle, and Drew Murphy compete in QMJHL Prospect Game at the Monctonian Tournament. Jeremy Balderston, Nick Reeves, and Brody Irving named as coaching staff for Team White.

Nov. 16 – Shannon MacAulay hired as strength and conditioning coach with the Minnesota Frost of the PWHL.

Nov. 24 – Team Power earns silver medal at Everest Curling National Club Championships. Amanda Power named tournament MVP and Janique LeBlanc wins Best Sportsmanship award.

Nov. 27 – Swimmer Keegan MacDougall receives regional Tom Longboat award recipient at the Aboriginal Sport Circle’s National Indigenous Sports Gala.

Nov. 28-Dec. 1 – PEI wrestlers from Island Wrestling Academy compete at series of tournaments in Ontario (RangaRoch Wrestling Tournament in Brampton, Junior Brock Badgers Wrestling Tournament in Thorold, & Western University Tournament in London).  Results:
Zander O’Meara – 4 gold
Mikhail Levedev – 2 gold, 1 bronze
Alexsa Matheson – 1 gold, 2 silver
Ben Reid – 1 gold, 1 silver
Molly Brown – 1 gold, 1 silver

Nov. 30 – Brooklyn Spates, from the Charlottetown FSC, qualifies to attend Skate Canada Trophy in Edmonton, AB February 6-9, 2025. Event showcases Canada’s top-up-and-coming Pre-Novice and Novice figure skaters in singles, pairs, and dance.

Dec. 3 – Alexa Rancourt of Holland Hurricanes basketball wins ACAA Athlete of the Week following 18-point, three-rebound, two-assist performance vs. STU Tommies.

Dec. 5 – Brett Arsenault named to the Team Canada East roster for the World Junior A Challenge.

Dec. 6 – Lauren Clark selected to attend the Female Regional Officials Program of Excellence (OPOE) event in Brampton, Ontario as a Linesperson.

Dec. 6 – U15 soccer players selected to attend Nova Scotia Whitecaps Prospects program – Ava Ramsay, Hadley Maclean, Nora Gill, Eva Russell, Maya Biswas, Phoebe LeCoure, Claire Ramsay, Marcos Figueroa, Luke Demeulenaere, Maxime Dunphy, Jermaine Gonzales, Isaac Mulokozi, Hein Van Eck, and  Logan McMurrer.

Dec. 8 – Steven Green serves as Referee in Chief for the Para Hockey Cup, hosted in Charlottetown.

Dec. 13 – Gerard Gallant named head coach of National Men’s Hockey team at Spengler Cup in Davos, Switzerland from Dec. 26-31; Mike Kelly named assistant coach

Dec. 11 – Referees Tanner Doiron and Jack Robinson with linesman Kalib Snow and Zack O’Meara officiate pre-tournament World Juniors game between Germany & Slovakia.

Dec. 13 – Figure skater Callum McEwan, cross-country skiers Ellen MacNearney and Tommy Ling, Chef de Mission Charity Sheehan, mission staff member Genna Phelan, and Communities liaison Sarah Profitt-Wagner attend Special Olympics Team Canada Training Camp in Calgary.

Dec. 14 – Kalib Snow officiates Bronze Medal Game between Team China & Team Czechia at Para Hockey Cup.

Dec. 14 – Mark Arendz completes first event of Para Biathlon World Cup season in Vuokatti, Finland with gold medals in 7.5km sprint and sprint pursuit events and silver in the 12.5km individual race.

Dec. 14 – Grant Boswall, equipment manager for Team Canada Para-Hockey, wins silver medal at the Para-Hockey Cup.

Dec. 15 – Brett Arsenault finishes as the top Canadian scorer at World Junior A Challenge with two goals and two assists in five games.

Dec. 18 – Ellie Mullins named to Field Hockey Canada’s U18 Women’s Team traveling to Carquefou, France, in May.

Dec. 20 – Charleigh MacDougall & Lacey MacLauchlan (assistant coach) named to Field Hockey Canada’s U16 Women’s roster and coaching staff traveling to Hradec Králové, Czechia, in April.

Dec. 27 – Sam Dowling and Carter Monkley attend Lacrosse Canada Development Team Tryouts.

Dec. 31 – Cam Squires scores 200th career point with Cape Breton Eagles in his 225th game.
