International Women’s Day – Maggie Mullins

Friday, March 8th is International Women’s Day and to celebrate, Sport PEI would like to recognize some of the women who are actively representing PEI as athletes! We asked them how they feel about being a leader for young female athletes on the island and what message they’d like to share.

In her first year living and competing off the island, Maggie Mullins is already making her impact – near and far.

The University of Toronto freshman was a regular starter and relied upon defender in her first season of intercollegiate field hockey, helping her team to a conference championship and silver medal at nationals. Maggie earned the title of Sport PEI Intercollegiate Female Athlete of the Year in December, becoming the first field hockey athlete to claim the award.

She sees leadership as a tool to motivate others to be their best and hopes to see more female athletes taking pride in themselves, teammates, and peers.

“I believe that leadership is not just about being in charge, but also about inspiring and empowering others,” said Maggie. “My message to other female athletes is that it’s a hard road sometimes, but staying grateful and connected with one another creates success.

“Be proud of your own accomplishments and celebrate the success of others.”

Maggie is far from the first Islander in field hockey to make a name for themselves outside of PEI, but wasn’t always as confident as she is today. Along with supporting teammates, Maggie hopes to see more young female athletes have the courage to believe in themselves.

“Embrace your passion and don’t let anyone tell you what you can or can’t do,” says Maggie about what she would tell a younger version of herself. “Keep pushing, stay confident, and always believe in yourself – you’re a force to be reckoned with!”

Sport PEI is also hosting a “She’s Good” event, sponsored by Maritime Electric, on Friday at Bluefield High for girls in grades 8-12. For more information, contact lboudreau@sportpei.pe.ca. To register, click here:
