PEI Newsmakers – April 2026
The performance of Prince Edward Island athletes continued to shine in April 2026, from multiple pro debuts, collegiate awards, and a slew of personal and team achievements across multiple sports.
Tyne Valley hosted the Maritime Under-16 AAA Hockey Championship, where the U16 Eastern Dukes fell just short of the Saint John Vitos 4-3 in the championship game. Two Dukes were honoured with tournament awards, Colin MacCormac was named the Top Scorer and Second Team All-Star, while Felix Hatton was named the Top Goaltender.
Island archer Keegan Crawford and his Lindsey Wilson University archery team finish the Mid-South Conference Outdoor Archery Championship with a silver medal in Williamsburg, KY.
All eight of Team PEI’s Provincial Flag Football Teams got their first taste of competition in April at the CFL Maritime Flag Football Challenge hosted at Saint Mary’s University in Halifax, NS. The teams as a whole accumulated seven wins and nine losses throughout a day of tough competition against Nova Scotia and New Brunswick.
Recognized for leading the OHL’s Ottawa 67’s to 47 wins this season and helping them capture the Dave Pinkney Trophy after allowing only 160 goals, the fewest in the league; Head Coach Dave Cameron was named the Ontario Hockey League’s Coach of the Year.
Headlining PEI’s lacrosse news in April, three Island athletes were drafted to the ECJLL via the import draft. Griffin Belik (2nd overall), Patrick Casey (7th overall), and Jude Milligan (8th overall), were all drafted by the Mi’Kmaq Warriors who play in Truro, NS.
On the baseball diamond, Brandon Langley made his professional debut with the Lake Elsinore Storm (Single-A affiliate of the San Diego Padres). Although emerging with a loss in his debut, Langley found his rhythm later in the month, racking up a win in his next two games.
In university athletics, three PEI athletes were recognized at the UNB Reds Athletics banquet and awards night. Men’s swim captain Blake Kingston was named the team’s MVP after his tremendous season, highlighted with two Male Athlete of the Week recognitions. Lydia Enman was named women’s wrestling Rookie of the Year, along with football’s Jake Rozell being named the teams Rookie of the Year as the Reds go-to weapon on offense as their starting running back.
Another Island hockey player is set to have his shot at the pros. Halifax Moosehead and NHL prospect Eddy Doyle has been ranked as the 108th North American Skater for 2026 NHL Entry draft.
On a rugby pitch in Hong King, Alysha Corrigan scores three tries for Canada as a part of the HSBC Rugby Sevens series. Canada finished fourth in the tournament, facing off against Australia, France, Great Britain, New Zealand, South Africa, and the USA.
Also in rugby news, official Shanda Assmus made her MLR debut during a week four matchup between Anthem Rugby Carolina and Old Glory DC in Charlotte, NC.
Two Triple A hockey clubs have medaled at their respective Atlantic’s this month. The U13 AAA Female Pownal Red Devils take Silver at U13 Atlantics in Sydney, NS; while the Eastern Express win bronze at U15 AAA Atlantics hosted in Clarenville, NL.
On the judo mats, Liam Matheson and Alexsa Matheson both capture gold medals, while Lucas Macdonald earns a silver medal at Eastern Canadian Judo Championships which were hosted in Edmundston, NB.
For the first time in PEI history, a high school ringette game was played. The Colonel Gray Colonels faced off against the École François-Buote Jaguars at Simmons Sports Centre, with École François-Buote emerging victorious by a score of 6-1.
PEI hosted the 2026 Canadian Atlantic Gymnastics Championships at the Delta in Charlottetown. 13 athletes emerged with a gold medal: Adele Scott, Finnegan Chandler, George Barnes, Sophie Chandler (x3), Annika MacDonald, Abraham Cote (x5), Kohl Dallaire, Percy Harper, Matao Burden, Hunter MacPherson, Alex Rodriguez (x7), Scarlett Shaffner, and Helena Neale (x4).
On the ice of Simmons Sports Centre, the Tignish Aces go all-in and win the 2026 Maritime Junior C Hockey Championships, defeating the Admirals Hockey Club of Nova Scotia by a final score of 9-4.
On the mats of the National Wrestling Championships (U15/U17/U19) in Grande Prairie, AB; Alexsa Matheson wins a gold (U19 – 61kg, Greco Roman) and bronze (U19 – 61kg) medal, while Molly Brown wins a bronze medal (U17 – 49kg). This marks the first time ever two PEI wrestlers have medaled at both the Canadian Greco and Freestyle Championships in the tournament.
