Prince Edward Island athletes and coaches delivered a series of standout performances across national and international stages in February, highlighted by Olympic success, university championships, and major individual milestones.

At the global level, Island curler Brett Gallant was front and centre at the Milano Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics. Gallant and partner Jocelyn Peterman finished fifth in mixed doubles competition before Gallant returned to the ice to win gold with Team Jacobs in the men’s event.
The Games featured several Island connections, with provincial leaders noting the pride generated by PEI athletes competing on the Olympic stage.

On the university scene, Island athletes continued to dominate. Wrestler Vanessa Keefe extended her remarkable run, capturing her fourth consecutive Ontario University Athletics (OUA) title before going on to win U Sports gold in the 68kg division, helping Brock University secure another national team championship.

In hockey, Sarah MacEachern captained Cornell University to a third straight Ivy League championship, while rookie Riley Bissett scored her first NCAA goal with Detroit Mercy.

Closer to home, UPEI athletes made their mark in Atlantic University Sport (AUS) competition. Lilly MacVicar captured gold in the 300m at the AUS track and field championships, while teammate Devon Lawlor earned second-team all-star honours in women’s basketball.
In the pool, swimmer Blake Kingston was named AUS Swimmer of the Meet after collecting three gold and three silver medals.

Basketball standout Spencer Rossiter also earned recognition at multiple levels, being named Athlete of the Week by Holland College, the Atlantic Collegiate Athletic Association (ACAA), and the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA).

Elsewhere, Island athletes continued to make waves internationally. Golfer Brett Shaw posted a top-10 finish at a junior tour event in Orlando, while young athletes and teams also saw success earlier in the month, including championship performances and strong showings in U.S.-based competitions.

Behind the bench, coaching milestones were also reached. Dave Cameron coached his 1,000th career Ontario Hockey League game with the Ottawa 67’s, marking a significant achievement for one of PEI’s most accomplished hockey figures.
