Alex Newson named Team PEI Flag Bearer for 2025 Canada Summer Games

Charlottetown, PE (July 30, 2025) – Team PEI is proud to announce that Alex Newson has been selected as the flag bearer for the Opening Ceremony of the 2025 Canada Summer Games, taking place on August 8, 2025, in St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador.
Alex will lead Team PEI into the Opening Ceremony at the Mary Brown’s Centre, proudly carrying the provincial flag in front of a national audience. Newson will compete in Basketball during the first week of the Games from August 8 – 17, 2025. Their selection recognizes not only outstanding athletic achievement, but also leadership, commitment, and embodiment of the Canada Games spirit.
“Being selected as flag bearer for Team PEI is an incredible honour. It’s a recognition of years of hard work, dedication, and the unwavering support I’ve received from my teammates and family. To lead this group of talented individuals onto the national stage is truly an honour,” said Alex Newson, Team PEI Basketball Athlete. “Representing Prince Edward Island and carrying our flag fills me with a sense of excitement and will be a moment that I will never forget. It’s a powerful reminder of where I come from and all the people who have helped me get here.”
The announcement was made at the Team PEI Rally, where fans, families, and sport partners gathered to celebrate PEI’s top young athletes before they head off to St.John’s. The event, held in Charlottetown at the PEI Convention Centre on July 30, 2025, featured an athletes’ parade followed by special remarks from the Honourable Dr. Wassim Salamoun, Lieutenant Governor of PEI, and the Honourable Rob Lantz, Premier of PEI.
“We’re proud to support Team PEI as they head to the Canada Games. These athletes, coaches, and volunteers represent the heart and spirit of our province, and I know they’ll make us all proud in Newfoundland and Labrador,” said the Hon. Rob Lantz, Premier of Prince Edward Island.
Nearly 400 athletes, coaches, technical support, and mission staff will be representing Prince Edward Island at the Games, including 24 teams across 16 different sports.
“It was amazing to see so many families and friends come together to celebrate the hard work and dedication of these athletes,” said Team PEI Chef de Mission, Nicolle Derry. “Congratulations to Alex Newson and all our athletes who truly represent the spirit of Team PEI. They are outstanding role models and ambassadors for our Canada Games program.”
The Opening Ceremony will officially kick off the 2025 Canada Summer Games, which run from August 8–24, 2025 in St. John’s, Newfoundland. The 20th edition of the Games will feature more than 4,000 of the nation’s top young athletes competing across 19 different sports.
