PEI Newsmakers – August 2025
August was another action-packed month of PEI sports. With Canada Games dominating many headlines, this month’s Newsmakers will highlight the non-Games achievements and accolades of the month.

August 1 – Team PEI cyclists earn 13 medals at Dieppe Canada Cup event

August 1 – Hannah Dixon becomes first PEI Umpire to officiate at Field Hockey National Championships.
Aug 3 – Charlottetown Jays win the Tier 1 title of 43+ Vintage Division at the Oldtimers National Baseball Championships.
Aug 4 – U15 PEIFC girls soccer team win gold at Canada Youth Cup.
Aug 5 – Amy Burk earns silver medal at IBSA Goalball Championships with Team Canada and qualified for world championships. Burk leads tournament with 29 foals scored.
Aug 6 – PEI U16 field hockey finishes 5th at Nationals. Coach Tracy McGee named FHC Coach of the U16 Tournament award and Charleigh MacDougall selected as Tournament 11 All Star.
Aug 7 – Hunter Burke wins NB3 Junior Golf National Championships – Boys 12-13 division.
Aug 9 – Riley Bissett named ECJLL Offensive Player of the Year and First-Team All-Star.
Aug 9 – Will Holland (20.2 ppg – 4th) and Noah Whitty (19.2 ppg – 6th) finish among scoring leaders at U15 Basketball Nationals. Whitty leads tournament in fouls drawn with 5.4 per game.
Aug 10 – Martin Sobey wins bronze at Americas Triathlon Cup Kelowna.
Aug 15 – Jeff Ellsworth named as part of 2025 induction class into the Softball Canada Hall of Fame.
Aug 15 – Team PEI Athletics sets six new provincial records at Legion National Track and Field Championships:
- Charlie Steele – U18 Men’s 110m Hurdles – 15.11s – Provincial Record
- Hannah Kwok – U16 Women’s Pole Vault – 2.30m – Provincial Record
- Men’s U18 4x100m Relay – 44.14s – U20 and U18 Provincial Record
- Frances Manning – U18 Women’s 100m hurdles – 15.96s – U18 Provincial Record
- Nathan Clinton – U18 Men’s 800m – 1:58.13s – U18 Provincial Record
- Men’s U18 4x400m Relay – 3:36.98s – U18 Provincial Record
Aug 13- 16 – Megan Mossey competes for Hockey Canada National Women’s Under-18 team in three-game series against USA; leads team in goals (2). Mental performance coach Jackson Slauenwhite a part of team staff.
Aug 23 – Alysha Corrigan scores try for Team Canada in 65-7 opening win against Fiji at Rugby World Cup in England. Also scored try in second match, a 42-0 win over Wales.
Aug 24 – U13AA Western Attack wins bronze at Eastern Canadian Softball Championships.
Aug 24 – PEI Senior Baseball Islanders win Men’s National Championships; first PEI baseball team to win senior national championship.
Aug 24 – Keegan Crawford places 33rd in U21 Men’s Compound at the World Archery Youth Championships in WInnipeg.
Aug 29 – Sean Matheson signs to play football for University of Queen’s Gaels; expected to start at left guard.
Aug 30 – Noah Dobson attends Hockey Canada National Teams Orientation Camp for players trying to make 2026 Canadian Olympic team.
Aug 31 – Cornwall Cougars 18UAA wins gold at Atlantic Baseball Championships.
