IWD with Katie Baker

Sport PEI’s International Women’s Day celebration was a powerful gathering that radiated energy and inspiration. Female leaders from all corners of the community—coaches, Board Members, and Executive Directors—gathered to honor the power and resilience of women in leadership. Gemma Koughan, the Executive Director of Sport PEI, welcomed everyone and emphasized the significance of this day, reminding us of the importance of lifting one another up. We were also lucky to have the presence of one of our very own Olympians, Hannah Taylor, whose participation brought an added layer of inspiration and pride to the celebration. The energy in the room was contagious, as these incredible women shared stories, supported each other, and celebrated the power of female leadership.
Katie Baker shared an impactful message on the power of mentorship, offering a fresh perspective by renaming it “sponsorship.” She encouraged women to sponsor each other, explaining how this shift in language can make supporting one another feel more approachable. Many women shy away from mentoring due to fears of inadequacy or time constraints, but this new approach reframes the idea—rather than one person being “mentored,” women can learn from and support one another equally. This shift was eye-opening, and many attendees felt it would encourage more women to step up and engage in the supportive roles they might have previously hesitated to take on.
Some guests also spoke about how, from a young age, women are often told not to be “too much” or “too loud,” and how that message is ingrained in us over time. The conversation highlighted the importance of women embracing their full selves, walking into a room with confidence, and taking up space. We deserve to have a seat at the table, and together, we can help lift each other to those positions of leadership and influence. It was a powerful reminder that women don’t need to shrink or hold back—our voices and presence are invaluable.
Katie then led a heartfelt icebreaker activity where attendees filled out a worksheet, reflecting on the women who have mentored them, those they turn to for advice, and the women who have inspired and shaped them into the individuals they are today. As groups came together to share their stories, the emotion in the room was palpable. For many, it was their high school coach, their first female coach at university, or even their mother who stood out as the unwavering pillar of support that helped shape their journey. As participants shared stories of these incredible women who offered guidance, encouragement, and strength through every stage of life, it was clear how deeply these connections resonated. The room was filled with powerful emotions, reminding everyone of the profound impact that these women had on their personal and professional growth.
The event was a beautiful moment of reflection, as women came together to celebrate the powerful role models who shaped them into the strong, resilient women they are today. Stories of mentorship, support, and inspiration filled the room, creating deep emotional connections and fostering a sense of empowerment and solidarity. It was a night that reminded everyone of the profound impact of lifting each other up, reinforcing the importance of women supporting women in both personal and professional spaces. The energy in the room was a testament to the strength of these connections and the collective power of women united
Prince Edward Island is especially fortunate that, as a small province, these incredible women are able to know each other on a personal level. This tight-knit community allows for even deeper bonds of support and empowerment, creating a unique and meaningful environment where women can thrive together.
