Prince Edward Island athletes, coaches and teams continued to make headlines throughout September, delivering impressive performances and representing the Island on provincial, national and international stages.

UPEI Hockey Coach Forbes MacPherson has been named Head Coach of Canada’s men’s hockey team for the 2027 FISU Winter Universiade in Changchun, China. MacPherson will lead Canada’s defending gold-medal team as it looks to repeat as champions on the international university sport stage.

The PEI Senior Islanders Baseball Team continued its dominance in the New Brunswick Senior Baseball League, capturing its fourth consecutive NBSBL championship. The Islanders will now turn their attention to the national stage, with the team set to travel to Edmonton next year to compete for the national championship. Several Islanders were also recognized for their outstanding seasons, with Dillon Doucette named an NBSBL All-Star at third base, Simon Dubois earning All-Star honours in left field, and Nick MacPhail selected as the league’s All-Star designated hitter. Tanner MacLean was also recognized for posting the league’s lowest ERA.

The PEI 14U Girls Provincial Baseball Team captured bronze at the Atlantic Championships in Moncton, securing the medal with an impressive 8-1 victory over Newfoundland and Labrador.

Standout triathlete Martin Sobey continued his strong international season with a pair of top-20 finishes on the World Triathlon Championship Series circuit. Sobey placed 7th at the World Triathlon Championship Series Karlovy Vary in the Czech Republic before finishing 12th at the World Triathlon Championship Series Grand Final in Pontevedra, Spain.

Multi-sport athlete Oliver Keezer has been named to Team Canada for the 2027 World Triathlon Championships in Hamburg, Germany. Keezer earned the selection following strong performances in triathlon and swimming, adding another international opportunity to his growing list of accomplishments.

On the greens, Hunter Burke finished 19th overall at the Team Canada NextGen Selection Golf Camp at Öviinbyrd Golf Club in Ontario. The camp brought together athletes competing for an opportunity to advance within Golf Canada’s national development system.

Rising para-archer Chad McCormack has been invited to shoot with the Canadian Archery Team at the Santiago 2026 Hyundai World Archery Para Series in Chile. The opportunity gives McCormack another chance to represent Canada on the international para archery stage.

In powerlifting, Sophia Allen captured a gold medal in Special Olympics Powerlifting at the Commonwealth Powerlifting Federation Championships in Winnipeg, adding another major accomplishment to a strong season for the PEI athlete.
