International Women’s Day – Sarah MacEachern

Sarah (wed)

Friday, March 8th is International Women’s Day and to celebrate, Sport PEI would like to recognize some of the women who are actively representing PEI as athletes! We asked them how they feel about being a leader for young female athletes on the island and what message they’d like to share.

A sophomore student-athlete at Cornell University, Canoe Cove’s Sarah MacEachern has built a reputation for leadership, achievement, and mindfulness all before her 20th birthday.

Winner of the 2023 True Sport award, Sarah fought back from a nasty concussion in 2023 while achieving Academic All-American status at her Ivy League school and returning to the ice by the summer to compete for Team Canada. The shot-blocking defender was back in the lineup full-time this season as Cornell won the Ivy League and defeated Quinnipiac University in conference playoff quarterfinals last weekend.

A gold medal winner at the 2022 World U18 Championships with Team Canada, Sarah’s involvement in sport has been more than solely a hockey player. The 19-year-old was an avid soccer player who regularly captained PEI provincial teams at younger ages and takes time to give back to younger athletes through programs like Future Elites and She’s Good.

Sarah aims to build a legacy of leadership for young female Island athletes and share her experiences in hopes of more being created by the next generation.

“Some people may say that being a girl in sport is difficult. They are not wrong, but a little bit of adversity can help to strengthen the competitive spirit and discipline that it takes to hit your goals,” says Sarah. “Challenges can lead to valuable life lessons. That’s the great part of sport.”

“Along with the fun, mental health benefits and physical health benefits from sport, there are also so many little things to learn. Trust yourself, and good things can happen.”

Sarah and Cornell face their conference leaders, Colgate University, in the ECAC semifinals this Friday.

Sport PEI is also hosting a “She’s Good” event, sponsored by Maritime Electric, on Friday at Bluefield High for girls in grades 8-12. For more information, contact lboudreau@sportpei.pe.ca. To register, click here:
