Arendz, Corrigan repeat as Top Senior Athletes at loaded 52nd Sport PEI Awards
CHARLOTTETOWN, December 18, 2025 – The 52nd PEI Amateur Sport Awards were hosted by Sport PEI on Thursday, December 18th at the Florence Simmons Performance Hall in Charlottetown, honouring the top performers of Island sport in 2025.
For the second straight year, the Lieutenant Governor’s (PEI’s top overall athlete) went to rugby athlete Alysha Corrigan, who also won the Stewart McKelvey Senior Female Athlete of the Year Award for the second consecutive year and fourth in the last five years. Corrigan played a pivotal role on the Canadian Senior Women’s Rugby team who earned a silver medal at the Rugby World Cup as well as a bronze medal in the Grand Finals of the Rugby Sevens World Tour.
Mark Arendz (Para-Nordic Biathlon) was named Stewart McKelvey Senior Male Athlete of the Year for a record fourth-straight year, extending his overall record for most Senior Male Athlete awards to eight. Arendz earned his third straight Crystal Globe as the top overall para-biathlon athlete at the World Cup and took gold at the IBU Para Biathlon World Championships.
The Ladner’s Source for Sports Female Junior Athlete of the Year category saw co-winners this year with Keely MacGrath (wrestling) and Megan Mossey (hockey) being named recipients.
MacGrath was the national Under-17 champion in the 65kg weight class and earned a silver medal at the 2025 Canada Summer Games in St. John’s, NL. Mossey was the top scoring defencemen in the OWHL U22 Elite League, played for Team Canada in the summer’s rivalry series against USA, and was a key member of Team Atlantic at the U18 National Women’s Hockey Championship, contributing heavily to a historic silver-medal performance while earning the Top Defenceman of the Tournament award. Mossey was also recently named to Canada’s National U18 team that will compete in the IIHF World Championships in January.
Riley Bissett became the first PEI lacrosse athlete to win a Sport PEI award as he was named the 2025 Ladner’s Source for Sports Junior Male Athlete of the Year. Bissett led the East Coast Junior Lacrosse League in goals with 64 tallies in 24 total games, set a team record for single-season goals, and was the second-youngest player to be named the league’s Offensive Player of the Year.
University of Toronto Varsity Blues team captain Maggie Mullins (field hockey) was named winner of the Synergy Fitness and Nutrition Female Intercollegiate Female Athlete of the Year for the second time in three years after a standout season which included a spot on the U Sports All-Canadian team. Western Carolina Catamounts pitcher Brandon Langley (baseball) won the Intercollegiate Male Athlete award after his final collegiate season landed him on the National Stopper of the Year watch list and a contract with the San Diego Padres organization.
The Charlottetown Senior Islanders’ (baseball) historic year was honoured with the CBC PEI Team of the Year award following a season that saw PEI’s first national baseball gold at the Senior Men’s championship and a third-straight regional title as champions of the NB Senior Men’s Baseball League.
The PEI Mutual Insurance Coach of the Year award went to Lacey MacLauchlan (field hockey) after a busy year. She made her debut as head coach of the U16 National Development team on a European tour, won Coach of the Tournament with Team PEI at the U18 National Championships, and led UPEI to a historic national bronze at U Sports Nationals, where she was also named U Sports Coach of the Year.
The following award winners were announced prior to the event:
True Sport Award – Kamari Scott, basketball: Scott concluded his five-year run of excellence on and off the court for the UPEI Panther’s men’s basketball team in courageous fashion. Scott’s dedication to community was honoured as the AUS and U Sports recipient of the Student-Athlete Community Service Award. He was also a first-team AUS All-Star and named Tournament MVP at the AUS Championships, where he also led a comeback win in the finals and helped UPEI win their first title in 22 years.
ADL Masters Athlete of the Year co-winner – John MacDonald, powerlifting: MacDonald won gold at the IPF World Championship (Masters 1) for the third straight year, becoming the first Canadian and second person ever to do so. He also won gold at the North American Powerlifting Federation championships and silver at the IPF Equipped Bench Press Worlds.
ADL Masters Athlete of the Year co-winner – Nancy Ripley, triathlon & duathlon: Competing at the age of 72, Ripley finished 7th in her age group at the World Ironman Championships and first in her age group at Ironman Ottawa, Hampton Ladies Triathlon, Rockwood Triathlon, and Dirt Dash Duathlon PEI.
PEI Mutual Insurance Official of the Year – Hannah Dixon, field hockey: Dixon became the first PEI official to officiate at a national championship and was awarded duties for the Under-16 gold-medal game.
SCORE! Charlottetown Event of the Year – Brookvale Canada Cup, mountain biking: This event was the first nationally and internationally UCI-sanctioned mountain bike event in PEI and the final event of the 2025 Canada Cup series. It generated an estimated $150,000+ in direct tourism spending and had 96% recommending the event and vowing to return with their friends.
ADL Volunteer Administrator of the Year – Ellen Murphy, rugby: Murphy has served as a Director at Large for the PEI Rugby Union and a board member for the past seven years, also maintaining the role of Director of Rugby for the last two. She was manager of the men’s Canada Games rugby team and leader for the Junior Women’s program the last five years.
Premier’s Award (Sports Organization of the Year) – Baseball PEI: It was an eventful year for Baseball PEI to say the least with the success of the Senior Islanders and men’s Canada Games team on the field. Girls baseball and officiating mentorship has seen a big bump in programming and participation. A new facility in Mill River was built which will contribute to the ever growing hosting capabilities on the island.
