Success on both the gridiron and lacrosse floor, along with Stammberger’s Hall of Fame induction, highlighted a memorable July 2026. The month also featured record-breaking performances and outstanding achievements across all levels of sport.

The month began with exciting news on the hockey front as Dawson Sharkey committed to the NCAA Division I Northeastern University Huskies men’s hockey program.

Canadian basketball legend Anna Stammberger was honoured in July, being named as an inductee into the Canadian Basketball Hall of Fame as part of the Class of 2026 in recognition of her outstanding playing career and lasting contributions to the sport.

On the softball diamond, both the Western Attack and Stratford Stealers secured their spots at the U13 Softball Eastern Canadian Championships in Newfoundland.

Team PEI’s 13U Provincial Baseball Team captured gold at the 15U AA Minhu Lee Memorial Tournament on home dirt in Cornwall.

On his home track, Aiden Campbell tied for sixth in Canada among U16 boys in the high jump after clearing 1.90 meters at the Athletics PEI Provincial Championships; his jump also marks the best in this category in Atlantic Canada.

Island swimmers continued to shine throughout the month. Veronica MacLellan, Erik Thompson, and Ivy Ban represented Prince Edward Island at the 2026 Bell Canadian Swimming Trials in Montreal, QC, where para-swimmer Veronica MacLellan earned a bronze medal in the 100-metre breaststroke.

Later in the month, PEI swimmers delivered another impressive performance at the East Coast Games in St. John’s, NL. Emily Gosbee captured one gold, two silver, and one bronze medal, while Ryan Reid earned four gold medals and one silver. Levi Wilmont dominated the competition with six gold medals and was named the top point earner in the 13–14 age category. Rylie Carr added a bronze medal, David Foley claimed silver, and the Charlottetown Bluefins earned bronze in both the men’s 15-and-over 400-metre freestyle and medley relays.

The PEI sport community celebrated several significant honours in July, as Colin MacAdam, Vernon Frizzell, and Ed Hilton were inducted into the PEI Sport Hall of Fame in recognition of their outstanding contributions to Island sport.

Benji Newson was selected as an assistant equipment manager for Hockey Canada’s National U17 Development Camp, joining the national program in an important support role.

The island saw great success on the gridiron as Team PEI’s U16 and U18 Provincial Tackle Football Teams both captured gold medals at the Atlantic Bowl in Fredericton, NB.

The RC United’s U15 Premier Girls team earned silver at the Codiac Cup in Moncton, NB.

On the rugby pitch in St. John’s NL, the Senior Women’s Provincial Rugby Team finished second at Rugby Atlantics.

Island golfers also competed against some of Atlantic Canada’s best at the NextGen Atlantic Championship. Reid Hart and Brett Shaw both finished tied for 12th, Archer MacDougall placed 23rd, Colin MacCormac tied for 24th, and Ayden MacAdam finished tied for 30th.

Additional success came on the softball field as the U15 Whitecaps earned a convincing 13-0 victory over the U17 Newfoundland Selects at Slemon Park.

At the Glenn Edison Memorial Golf Tournament in support of KidSport PEI which was held at Eagles Glenn Golf Course, Steve Kotulak makes a hole in one.

In a stunning finale to their season, the Island Oaks Junior B Lacrosse Club captured the Hamilton Cup in overtime 9-8 against the Fundy Riptide, claiming the East Coast Junior Lacrosse League championship in their inaugural season. #40 Noah Lynch is credited for scoring the golden goal.

The U19 Men’s Provincial Quad Rowing Team struck gold at the Nova Scotia Sprints – Bud Myra Memorial Regatta. The crew of Olive Thompson, Walter Proctor, Iker Cordero, and Bennett Li captured first place in the event.

The pride of Triathlon PEI Martin Sobey earned international success by winning a silver medal as part of Canada’s Mixed Relay Team at a World Triathlon event on home soil Edmonton. The Canadian team finished with a time of 1:22:24.

Dr. Ben Cameron was named Team Physician for Canada’s National Men’s Junior Hockey Team for the 2027 season, recognizing his continued commitment and contributions to the athletes he serves.

The Mid-Isle Mustangs claimed the 13U AAA provincial title by winning the provincial eliminations. The team will represent Prince Edward Island at the 13U AAA Baseball Atlantic Championship in St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador.

On the lacrosse fields of the Oshawa Civic Recreation Complex in Ontario, four Island athletes were selected to the Lacrosse Canada National Development Team Program. Isabella Doucette, Emily MacPhail, Sam Ling, and Carter Monkley participated in the national development initiative.

Team PEI’s U17 Women’s Soccer Team captured Atlantic gold by defeating Nova Scotia 1-0 in the championship game to win the Under 16 Girls Atlantic Championship.

At Field Hockey U18 Nationals which was held in Surrey BC, Jessie Stewart was named a tournament 11 All Star team as well as the top goalkeeper of the tournament. She has also been selected for U16 nationals in Calgary.

In International hockey news, rising star Megan Mossey has been named to the 2026-27 National Women’s Under-18 Summer Selection Camp Roster. The camp will include various training sessions, practices, and three Red-White games from Aug. 5-8. The final roster will be announced on Aug. 9 ahead of a three-game series against the USA.
