Wallace Morrison – U18 Sherwood Parkdale Rangers

What is an important skill that this coach has that makes them a great coach?

Motivation through positive input.

What lesson(s) has this coach instilled in you/athletes/or others?

So many. Wally took over from an interim coach after a few tough, unorganized losses. He immediately formed relationships with each player, worked to understand their strengths and personalities, and was a positive and supportive mentor for a group of boys aged 15 to 18. He preached fairness, sportsmanship, and belief.

Pick 3 words that describes this coach. Explain why you chose each word.

Inspiring – as a parent, watching and listening to Wally’s positive reinforcement from the sidelines was so fantastic to hear every practice, and every game. Patient – he always took the time to listen to his players, did not get worked up or act negatively toward players or officials ever. Dedicated – Wally came out of “retirement” to lead this team to a provincial championship, and helped a team that lost or drew its first five games come together, believe in themselves, and ultimately win the provincial championship against a team that had lost only one match all season.

Write a memory or story about this coach, that impressed you.

One of Wally’s favourite shouts from the sidelines was “NO FOULS!” as his players pressed the other team in their end. His ability to preach fairness and playing soccer the “right way” without malice and focusing on players’ abilities is really wonderful and memorable.

Thank you for all that you do! Make sure to say ‘Thanks Coach’ to a special coach in your life!
