Junior Female Athlete of the Year

Chloe Cudmore – Gymnastics

Gymnast Chloe Cudmore began the 2017-2018 season in level 8 where she was ranked the top female gymnast in the province. In February, the coaches decided to move her into level 9 with hopes that she would qualify for the National Championships. After a tough meet she obtained the scores to qualify for Nationals becoming the first female gymnast from the Island to qualify in over seven years.

Just 12 years of age, Chloe continues to push herself to new heights. She recently placed first in the selection process for Team PEI’s Canada Games gymnastics team.  It will be an exciting event for Chloe to represent PEI in Red Deer in February.

Lauren Lenentine – Curling

This small province continues to produce great curlers and Lauren Lenentine is quickly showing why she might be the next big name.

The year started off with a bang for the skip as Lauren led her team to an Island Junior championship, qualifying them for a trip to Nationals.  It was during the PEI Scotties Tournament of Hearts, however, the younger squad started to really shine.  They gave the more experienced women’s teams a run for their money making it to the final before looking 6-2 to the Robyn MacPhee rink.

After catching the eye of the Kaitlyn Jones rink from Halifax, the mainland squad invited Lauren to attend Worlds as the team’s fifth.  It was a great experience as the team won gold. Shortly after the event, Team Jones announced Lenentine would be joining their team full-time while she furthered her education in Halifax.

A solid student, athlete and leader in the community Lauren will be a force to be reckoned with for years to come.

Hannah Taylor – Wrestling

Possibly one of the greatest wrestlers in PEI history, 2018 was an outstanding year for Hannah Taylor.

Regionally she won the Junior and Senior Ontario Provincial Championships and nationally she won her sixth Junior title. Hannah was named the Most Outstanding Female Wrestler for the sixth time at the national event.

Internationally, Hannah kept the year’s winning streak alive capturing gold at the Junior Pan Am Championships in Brazil.  It is worth noting Hannah finished this tournament with zero points scored against.

The journey to the Olympics is a long one, but this wrestling hopeful has the odds in her favour based on her performance to date.
