PEI Wrestlers Compete at Ontario Winter Open

2022 Ontario Winter Open

Four members of the 2022 PEI Canada Games Wrestling Team competed this past weekend (March 4+5) in the Ontario Winter Open in Caledonia Ontario. The team coaches for the event were Veronica Keefe and John Keefe.

On Saturday the U-19 divisions were in action. Two team members competed. Vanessa Keefe fought at 74 Kg. and finished with a record of 3-0. Each of the victories was by Superiority. Vanessa won each match by 10 or more points and had no points scored against her in her gold medal victory.

R.J. Hetherington was the second fighter for Team PEI on Saturday. R.J. fought in the U-19, 65 Kg. class and finished with a bronze medal from a record of 3-1. In each of his victories R.J. pinned his opponent.

On Sunday the older Junior and Senior divisions wrestled. Team PEI was once again led by Vanessa Keefe who moved up age divisions and fought in a combined Junior/ Senior classification at 76 Kg. The result was a Gold medal as a Junior and a bronze medal as a Senior.

R.J. Hetherington also moved up in age classifications and fought in the Junior division on the second day at 65 Kg. R.J. finished the weekend with a bronze medal with some challenging competition.

Andrew Clow and Christian Desreux were the final members of the team to compete. Both athletes fought in the Junior 85 Kg. division. This was the first out of province competition for both athletes. Andrew fought well, but was unsuccessful in his results. Christian was able to make it to the bronze medal match with some solid fights, before ultimately placing 4th in the division.

The team is looking forward to competing in the Alberta Open on March 18 & 19. This tournament will see most of the PEI team in action.
