PEI Wrestlers compete at Alberta Open

PEI Wrestlers Alberta Open

The PEI Provincial Wrestling Team competed in the Alberta Open Wrestling Championships this past weekend. The competition involved over 500 wrestlers across 7 provinces and territories. The 7 wrestlers representing PEI came home with  1 gold, 3 silver and 2 bronze medals.

 

Beatrice Galaise, fighting in the U-17 female 80 kg class took home a gold medal for PEI with a 3-0 record through a pin and superiority decisions.

 

The silver medal group saw Vanessa Keefe at 76 kg move up to the Junior Female age division. Keefe compiled 2 wins in a highly skilled weight group, before losing in the final to the top ranked 20 year old in the country.

In a large male 65 kg class in the U-19 division R.J. Hetherington dominated his pool with 4 wins by pin, before losing an exciting gold medal match.

The silver medal haul was completed by Bella Galaise who fought in the female Junior 62 kg division. In a very competitive weight group Galaise compiled a 2-2 record for the second place finish.

In the male Junior 86 kg division Christian Desreux dominated his pool through superiority before losing a 4-4 tie breaker in the crossover match. Desreux ultimately captured the bronze finishing with a 3-1 record.

The bronze medal haul was completed by Lydia Enman in the female 61 kg. U-19 division. Enman, who was competing in her first wrestling competition after previous experience in judo, pinned her final opponent to capture the third place finish.

Andrew Clow also competed for team PEI.

The team will be looking to attend further competitions to lead up to the National Championships’ scheduled for late May and early June.
