P.E.I. Speed SkateTeam Bound for Canadian Youth Championships
March 25th, 2022, Charlottetown – Speed Skate PEI has revealed its team for the 2022 Canadian Youth Short Track Championships (East), taking place in Sherbrooke, Quebec this weekend. Three skaters will fly the Island flag, in a field of more than 120 of the best 11- to 15-year-old short track speed skaters from Ontario, Quebec, the Atlantic Provinces and Nunavut.
Team P.E.I. will be led by Zack O’Meara of Charlottetown, who recently returned from his Canada Cup debut in Richmond, British Columbia. O’Meara earned a pair of personal best times and skated to 47th place in a field of the country’s top fourteen- to nineteen-year-old skaters at the B.C. event and will lace up among sixteen skaters in the 15-year-old male category in Sherbrooke.
Brendan Reynard, also from Charlottetown and Baiden Jack of New Dominion will make their Canadian Youth Championships debut for P.E.I., both skating in the 12-year-old male category. O’Meara skated in the previous edition of the Youth Championships event, then known as the Canada East Short Track Championships, held in Campbellton, N.B., in 2019.
Reynard has shown steady improvement during the season, where he earned a gold medal in his debut competition on the Quebec inter-regional circuit, along with a silver at the Atlantic Cup Speed Skating Championships in Charlottetown. Jack picked up a gold medal at the Harold Joyce Speed Skating Championships in Fredericton earlier this season and enters the event in strong form.
Scott Beamish will be coaching the P.E.I. squad in Sherbrooke.
Racing gets underway with the 1500-metre and 200-metre events on Saturday and will conclude with the 400-metre and 2000/3000-metre points races on Sunday. Island skaters will also participate in relay events as members of inter-provincial teams on Saturday and Sunday.
