Developing athletes and leaders at Made in PEI

Thursday, July 30th, Sport PEI had their second annual “Made in PEI” event. Hosted at 40 Enman Crescent in Charlottetown, the event saw spectators and presenters from across the province. Organized as a panel discussion, twelve different athletes and sports professional experts shared their experiences with younger athletes.

A range of topics was discussed, including balancing school with sports, being a role model, leadership, rest and recovery, mental preparation, and healthy eating practices.

The presenters included Ava Boutilier, Kameron Kielly, Ryan MacKinnon (hockey), Bailey Smith (athletics), Cole MacLaren (baseball), Lauren Lenentine (curling), Kristen Arsenault (archery), Colin Moore (physiotherapist), Meagan Ferguson (mental training), Nancy Fong (registered dietitian), Kristin Noonan (coaching services), and Kevin Elliot (athletic therapist).
All presentations followed the guidelines from the Chief Public Health Office. Participants were spaced out to a minimum of six feet and asked to bring a mask.

Kristin Noonan, a manager of coaching services for Softball Canada shared “Made in PEI was an excellent event providing opportunity for local High Performance athletes and Sport Experts to share their knowledge and experience, giving back to our Island youth.”

Sport PEI Senior Coordinator, Lynn Boudreau shared that events like these are valuable opportunities to hear how people made it in different sports. Boudreau elaborated in saying, “We do these events for the participants, but this is also something that we like to do at Sport PEI to hopefully build those younger high-performance athletes as leaders and mentors in the community.”

Proceeds from the event went to KidSport PEI. This not-for-profit organization donates money to families to remove the financial barrier that places their children against the opportunity to play sports.

Sport PEI hopes to continue to host this annual event and build upon panel discussions like these to create a further community feels amongst athletes in Prince Edward Island.
