The 2023 Sport PEI awards will be our 50th edition! To celebrate this milestone, we wanted to take a look back at those who have received the Lieutenant Governor’s award as PEI’s top athlete of the year.
Rick Vaive – 1978 – Hockey
Rick Vaive won the Lieutenant Governor’s award in 1978 for his play with the Sherbrooke Castors ice hockey team of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League. During the season, Vaive would tally 76 goals and 79 assists for a total of 155 points in only 68 games- good enough for 5th most among the league that season.
Vaive would lead the Castors to 41 win, 26 loss, and 5 tie regular season record which would have them in second place with 87 points in the Dilio Division. Vaive’s Castors would be eliminated from the playoffs in the semi final round by a score of 4-1 at the hands of the eventual league champions.
