50 Years of Sport PEI Awards – Nancy White
The 2023 Sport PEI awards will be our 50th edition! To celebrate this milestone, we wanted to take a look back at those who have received the Lieutenant Governor’s award as PEI’s top athlete of the year.
Nancy White – 1975, 1979 – Speed Skating
Nancy White won the Lieutenant Governor’s award in 1975 and 1979 for her accomplishments in the sport of speed skating. In 1975, Nancy would compete in a Quebec tournament on her way towards the Canada Games. At the Quebec tournaments, Nancy would finish with a silver and two bronze medals, earning her second overall in the competition. Nancy would win a bronze medal at the Canada Games that same year, which would earn her a spot on the Canadian Junior team where she would attend a tournament in China. In 1979, White would attend her second Canada Games. White became the first Islander to win a gold medal at the Canada Winter Games in the 3000 meter event. She would also walk away with three silver medals. That same year, Nancy would attend the North American Speed Skating Championships where she would take home two silvers, and three bronze medals for her efforts.
