50 Years of Sport PEI Awards – Jared Connaughton
The 2023 Sport PEI awards will be our 50th edition! To celebrate this milestone, we wanted to take time this year to look back at those who have received the Lieutenant Governor’s award as PEI’s top athlete of the year.
Jared Connaughton – Athletics – 2005, 2008, 2012
Jared first received the Lieutenant Governor’s award in 2005 after becoming the first PEI athlete in history to win two gold medals at the Canada Games. Jared won gold in the 100m and 200m events in Regina. In 2008, Jared would win the Lieutenant Governor’s award again after becoming the Canadian Champion in the 200m sprint and then representing Canada at the Olympic games for the first time. 4 years later in 2012, Jared would be recognized as PEI’s top athlete once again. Winning the 200m bronze medal at the Canadian Championships and returning to the Olympics, competing in the team-relay and finishing 11th in the 200m. This great season resulted in Jared’s 3rd Lieutenant Governor’s award in his illustrious athletic career.
