50 Years of Sport PEI Awards – Donna Phillips
The 2023 Sport PEI awards will be our 50th edition! To celebrate this milestone, we wanted to take a look back at those who have received the Lieutenant Governor’s award as PEI’s top athlete of the year.
Donna Phillips – Field Hockey – 1980
Donna Phillips (Hornibrook) won the Lieutenant Governor’s award in 1980 for her accomplishments in the sport of Field Hockey. Donna was one of the top performers in the PEI Senior Ladies’ Field Hockey team. She starred with the University of New Brunswick team and was named an AUAA all-star for the third straight year and a CIAU all-star for the second time.
Donna would become the AUS’ all-time leading goal-scorer with 73. Donna made the transition to coaching and had tremendous success. Donna won a Canada Games gold medal with New Brunswick, two silver medals at the CIAU Nationals Championships with UNB, and would go on to coach at Cornell University.
Donna would be inducted into the PEI Sports Hall of Fame in 2010.
