2021 Sport PEI Scholarship Recipients
This year, Sport PEI is awarding four student-athlete scholarships valued at $1000 each. The criteria used to select the recipients includes achievements in sport, the classroom and their communities. This year, the scholarships were made possible thanks to support from Sport Centre Physiotherapy, Connolly Group, AVIS Car Rental, and KKP.
The 2021 Sport PEI Scholarships recipients are Landon Gallant (Three Oaks), Karla McCallum (Colonel Gray), Mia Martell (Montague), and Jacquelyn Taylor (Bluefield). Each of the student-athletes have excelled in the classroom, their sport and their community.
Landon Gallant, a Three Oaks Senior High graduate, will be studying Kinesiology at Acadia this fall while playing for the Acadia Axemen Football team.
A multisport athlete, Landon excelled in football, baseball, rugby, and basketball, at Three Oaks winning multiple championships and individual accolades. An all-around talented athlete, Landon will look to develop into a leader on the football field after helping the Summerside Clippers to back-to-back Varsity championships. Off the field, Landon has maintained a 97% average in the classroom and has a positive impact on his community as a peer-helper at Three Oaks, volunteering with ME to WE, and working with a child with autism. We are excited to see what the future holds for Landon!
Karla McCallum, a Colonel Gray High graduate, will be studying Civil Engineering at the University of Waterloo in the fall.
Most known for her prowess on the badminton court, the former Canada Games athlete has earned many provincial, regional, and national championship medals, including 2021 PEISAA gold in women’s singles, 2019 Atlantic championships gold in women’s singles, and 2019 National Championships bronze in girl’s doubles. Not to be outdone in the classroom, the Charlottetown native, holds a 95% average and still makes time to volunteer with the YMCA and Environmental club, tutor students, and led a project that sent Christmas baskets to children in Peru. Karla will be joining the Badminton team this upcoming fall at Waterloo, we have no doubt she will do great things as a student, athlete, and community citizen.
Mia Martell, a Montague Regional High graduate, will be pursuing a Bachelor of Science degree Majoring in Biology this fall, while playing for the women’s soccer team at UPEI.
On the pitch, Mia has been selected to attend the High-Performance Player soccer camp with the Vancouver Whitecaps, while also being named a PEISAA soccer all-star, and has represented Team PEI at Atlantic and National Championships. Mia has also represented Ringette PEI at Regional and National events. Claiming the silver medal at the 2019 Canadian Ringette National championships while also being named to the all-star team and the fastest skater. An impressive leader in sport and school, the Belfast native boasts a 95% average in the classroom and finds time to volunteer with PEI Provincial Soccer, the Eastern Eagles Soccer club, the Eldon Ladies Auxiliary, and at the Georgetown rink. We are looking forward to cheering Mia on with the Panthers next year.
Jacquelyn Taylor, a Bluefield High graduate, will be pursuing a Bachelor of Science degree, Majoring in Mathematics next year at Appalachian State University.
A golfer from New Glasgow, Jacquelyn has been recognized as one of the top junior golfers on PEI as a 2-time PEI Golf Association Junior golfer of the year, a 2-time PEISAA provincial champion, and several top 5 finishes at the Junior Island Amateur Open, Belvedere Island Open, and the Atlantic Amateur Championships. Jacquelyn is also training with the 2021 Canada Games and would have attended the National Championships this past year if they were able to run. Jacquelyn is also a consistent student in the classroom, maintaining an 96% average, while still making time to volunteer with Best Buddies, Special Olympics, Burnside Community Care, Andersons Creek Junior Club, and as a tutor at Bluefield. Jacquelyn will be joining the golf team at Appalachian State this fall. Best of luck, we know you’ll accomplish so much!
