Sport PEI Scholarship Recipients:

Kristen Arsenault, Devon Lawlor, Isaac McCardle, and Isaac Wolters.

This year, Sport PEI will award four student-athlete scholarships valued at $1000. The criteria used to select the recipients includes achievements in sport, the classroom and their communities. This year, the scholarships were made possible thanks to sponsorships from Sport Centre Physiotherapy, Connolly Group, AVIS Car Rental, and KKP.

The 2020 Sport PEI Scholarships winners are Kristen Arsenault (Evangeline),  Devon Lawlor (Charlottetown Rural), Isaac McCardle (Colonel Gray) and Isaac Wolters (Bluefield). Each of the student-athletes have excelled in the classroom, their sport and their community.

Kristen Arsenault, an Ecole Evangeline graduate, will be pursuing a Bachelor of Arts degree, Majoring in Psychology next year at St. Thomas University.

An archer from Wellington, Kristen has competed in several prestigious events including the 2019 Canada Games, 2019 Canadian Outdoor Archery championships, and the 2019 World Youth Archery Championship. While at the Canada Games, Kristen was a silver medalist and was one of two Islanders to medal. Later in 2019, Kristen won the gold medal at the Canadian Outdoor Archery Championships and placed 17th out of 47 at the World Youth Archery Championship. Kristen is also a straight shooter in the classroom, maintaining an 88.5% average, while still making time to volunteer at her local church and with sports event planning committees. Good luck in 2020 and beyond Kristen, we know you’ll accomplish so much!

Devon Lawlor, a Charlottetown Rural High graduate, will be studying Biology at UPEI this fall and plans to pursue a career in medicine, while playing for the UPEI Women’s Basketball team.

A multisport athlete, Devon excelled in basketball, volleyball, and softball at Charlottetown Rural and was named a 1st team all-star in each sport. An all-around talented athlete, basketball was where the Mount Stewart native truly shined, suiting up for the 2017 Canada Games team, attended Basketball Canada U16 High Performance camp in 2016, and was recently named the 2019 Basketball PEI Junior Female Athlete of the Year.  Off the court Devon has maintained a 95.6% average in the classroom and has a positive impact on her community working with the Inner-City Life Skills Camp, Basketball 101, Basketball PEI camps, and much more. We are excited to see what the future holds for Devon!

Isaac McCardle, a Colonel Gray High graduate, will be studying at Chemistry at Mount Allison University to pursue a career in medicine or public health policy.

Most known for his long-distance running abilities, 2019 PEISAA Cross Country Champion, 2nd place in the 2018 Atlantic Open Cross-Country Championships, and gold medals in the 800m and 1200m PEISAA track and field provincials, Isaac is also a talented Sail PEI athlete and a Taekwondo black belt. Not to be outdone in the classroom, the Charlottetown native, holds a 97.3% average and still makes time to volunteer with the Charlottetown Yacht club, Taekwondo PEI, Canadian Diabetes Association, IWK, and is a member of the Colonel Gray Student Council Executive. Isaac will be joining the cross country and track team this upcoming fall, we have no doubt he will do great things as a student, athlete, and community citizen.

Isaac Wolters, a Bluefield High graduate, will be pursuing a Bachelor of Science degree Majoring in Computer Science this fall at UPEI.

On the pitch, Isaac one of 2 Islanders selected to attend the High-Performance Player soccer camp with the Vancouver Whitecaps. Isaac has also represented PEI at Nationals for 3 consecutive years and won his 2nd PEISAA AAA men’s soccer provincial championship in 2019 as team captain. An impressive leader on and off the pitch, the Springvale native boasts a 97.6% average in the classroom and finds time to volunteer at the QEH, his local Church, the Central Queens Soccer Club, and with the PEI Soccer Association. Isaac will be joining the UPEI Men’s Soccer Team next year and will look to backstop the team to success during his time at UPEI.
